Stastny and Stransky Selected by Blades in Import Draft
After sitting idle through the first 9 hours of today’s Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, the Saskatoon Blades Hockey Club took care of business with two selections in the 10th hour.
As a result, Blades’ Alternate Governor, General Manager and Head Coach Lorne Molleken is very happy to announce that forwards Andrej Stastny and Matej Stransky have been chosen in the annual C.H.L. Import Draft.
Stastny was taken with the Blades’ 1st round pick, 57th overall. He was a team-mate of Blades’ centre Marek Viedensky at the 2010 I.I.H.F. World Under-20 Hockey Championship in Saskatoon with Team Slovakia…registering 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points in 6 games while being assessed 10 penalty minutes and compiling a -2 rating. His lone goal in the tournament was the game-winner in a relegation round, 3-2, victory over Austria on New Year’s Day at Credit Union Centre.
“We’re extremely pleased to be able to select him,” said Molleken. “He’s a player we’ve had an opportunity to see at the Under-18 in Fargo a couple of years ago. We thought he would be a tremendous draft if he ever decided to come over. Where we were picking, we think it’s a bonus to get him and we look forward to him coming.”
The Blades acquired the first pick in the 2nd round of the C.H.L. Import Draft, 61st overall, from Prince George. In exchange, the Cougars receive Saskatoon’s 8th round selection in the 2012 W.H.L. Bantam Draft. With that 61st selection, Molleken chose Stransky…a 1993-born right winger from the Czech Republic.
“Stransky is a young man who comes highly recommended from player agent Craig Oster, whom we’ve dealt with before,” explained Molleken. “He’s a young guy with all kinds of potential.”
Both Andrej Stastny and Matej Stransky are expected to be at Saskatoon Blades’ training camp when it starts August 25.
