Blades Double Up Warriors
The Saskatoon Blades gained ground on the Eastern Conference leaders with a 4-2 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Tuesday night at home.
Walker Wintoneak (Flin Flon, MB), Darian Dziurzynski (Lloydminster, AB), Gaelan Patterson (Saskatoon, SK), and Marek Viedensky (Handlova, Slovakia) scored for the Blades, who have just three games remaining in the regular season calendar.
Moose Jaw – 2nd – Dylan Hood (Antonin Honejsek) 4:45
Hood gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead early in the second period with his 22nd of the year. The 19-year-old worked a give-and-go with Honejsek before firing a one-timer past goaltender Steven Stanford (Calgary, AB) from the left wing faceoff circle.
Saskatoon – 2nd – Wintoneak (Patterson) 10:27 sh
Wintoneak brought the Blades even with his 25th of the season and 4th shorthanded marker of the campaign. The overage winger moved down his off wing and let go a wrist shot that was tipped by a Warriors’ defender high over the shoulder of goaltender Brandon Glover.
Saskatoon – 2nd – Dziurzynski (Randy McNaught, Duncan Siemens) 12:33
The Blades went up 2-1 on Dziurzynski’s 14th of the season just over two minutes later. McNaught (Nanaimo, BC) picked up an assist on the play after firing a direct cross-ice pass to a streaking Dziurzynski at the side of the net.
Moose Jaw – 3rd – Jason Bast (Thomas Frazee, Danny Gayle) :29
The Warriors tied things up again at two on Bast’s 30th of the season. Frazee brought the puck around from the back of the net and fed it to the 20-year-old at the foot of the crease, who made no mistake.
Saskatoon – 3rd – Patterson (Charles Inglis, Siemens) 2:58 pp
Patterson put the Blades out in front with his 26th of the year and 5th on the power play. The fourth-year Blade wrapped the puck around the left side of the net and had his shot go in off the stick of Glover.
Saskatoon – 3rd – Viedensky 19:19 en
The Blades sealed things with Viedensky’s 18th of the season. The 19-year-old moved across centre ice and sent a backhand through a group of sticks to the middle of the cage.
In goal, Stanford stopped 28 of 30 shots to claim the victory. Moose Jaw received a 23-save performance from Glover in a losing cause.
Final score Saskatoon Blades 4, Moose Jaw Warriors 2.
The Blades improve to 45-17-3-4 for 97 points and now sit one point back of the idle Brandon Wheat Kings for second in the Eastern Conference. The Warriors fall to 33-26-5-5 for 76 points and stay three points up on the Swift Current Broncos for seventh in the Eastern Conference.
