Blades Fall Short against Pats
The Saskatoon Blades fell 3-2 at home on Wednesday night to the Jordan Eberle-led Regina Pats in the final game in Saskatoon in the star forward’s junior career.
Stefan Elliott (North Vancouver, BC) and Derek Hulak (Saskatoon, SK) scored for the Blades, who have now lost four out of their last six games.
Regina – 1st – Jordan Eberle (Mitch McColm, Myles Bell) 9:04
The Pats opened the scoring midway through the opening frame on Eberle’s 47th of the year. The Oilers’ draft pick tipped a McColm shot in front and it was 1-0.
Regina – 2nd – Eberle (Jordan Weal, Hampus Gustafsson) 4:18
Eberle made it 2-0 with his second of the night and 48th on the campaign early in the second period. The 19-year-old redirected a centering pass from Weal in front past goaltender Adam Morrison (White Rock, BC)
Saskatoon – 2nd – Elliott (Walker Wintoneak, Gaelan Patterson) 19:18
Elliott cut the Pats’ lead in half before the middle frame was out. The defenseman moved past a Regina forward, had his first shot blocked, followed up on the rebound and put it past a sprawling Dawson Guhle for his 25th of the season.
Regina – 3rd – Myles Bell (Kyle Mulder, Andrew Rieder) 3:29
The Pats made it a two-goal game once again on the 4th of the year from Bell. The Pats worked right to left with Mulder finally setting up Bell with a behind-the-back-no-look pass in front for a one-timer goal.
Saskatoon – 3rd – Hulak (Elliott, Marek Viedensky) 14:37
Hulak made it 3-2 with just over five minutes left on his 32nd of the season. Elliott fired a wrist shot from the point that the 20-year-old Blades’ captain tipped in front. But it was all for naught as the Blades were unable to tie things up late.
In between the pipes, Morrison made 31 saves in a losing cause in the Blades net. The 17-year-old Guhle stopped 33 of 35 shots to lay claim to the victory in the Regina net.
Final score Regina Pats 3, Saskatoon Blades 2.
The Blades drop to 45-18-3-4 for 97 points and enter the final weekend of the season three points back of the Brandon Wheat Kings for first in the East Division and second in the Eastern Conference. The Pats improve to 30-33-3-4 for 67 points and are now tied with the Prince Albert Raiders for ninth in the conference with a playoff spot out of reach.
The Blades finish off the home portion of their regular season schedule on Friday in the first game of a home-and-home series to complete the season against the Prince Albert Raiders.
